徳島県阿南市生まれ。太平洋を望む南部の漁師町の端で育つ。2000年より独学でタトゥーを開始し、国内外のコンベンションを経て2015年に沖縄北谷町にSynchronicityをオープン。タトゥーと絵画の両面で活動を続ける。
Born in Anan, Tokushima. Raised at the edge of a Pacific fishing village. Self-taught tattooist since 2000, opened Synchronicity in Chatan, Okinawa in 2015. Active in both tattooing and painting.
自分の祖父母は四人とも米農家でした。実家は徳島県の南部の田舎の漁師町の端っこです。子供の頃から18歳で大阪に上京するまで、第一次産業の空気を傍に、太平洋を眼前に育ちました。
今、沖縄で絵の展示をするのはかなりの偶然の積み重ねです。農業もアートも言わずがもなビジネスですが、この展示は運良くそこから逸脱することを許されています。何処かの酔狂な人と共感できれば、少しでも道連れができれば良いかなと思っています。
All four of my grandparents were rice farmers. My family home was on the edge of a fishing village in the southern countryside of Tokushima Prefecture. From childhood until I moved to Osaka at 18, I lived surrounded by the atmosphere of primary industries, with the Pacific Ocean right before my eyes.
The fact that I now exhibit paintings in Okinawa is a remarkable accumulation of coincidences. Both farming and art are undeniably businesses — but this exhibition is fortunate enough to be permitted to deviate from that. I hope to resonate with some eccentric soul out there, to find a companion along the way, even if just a little.
2007年頃、カリフォルニアのタトゥーアーティスト Jeff Gouge のペインティングスタイルとの出会いが転機となりました。彼は日本の伝統的な和彫りの題材である般若や竜を油彩で表現していました。その試み自体は昔からあるものでしたが、彼の作品は飛び抜けてカッコ良く、アクリル画を始めるきっかけとなりました。
正式な美術教育を受けることなく、美術館への訪問と独学を通じてアートの歴史を吸収しました。その個人的な視点が、独自の絵画スタイルの基盤となっています。
Around 2007, a pivotal encounter with California tattoo artist Jeff Gouge's painting style changed everything. Gouge was expressing traditional Japanese wabori subjects — Hannya masks and dragons — through oil painting. While such attempts had existed before, his work was simply on another level.
Without a formal art education, Knuckle absorbed art history through museum visits and self-directed study. That personal lens became the foundation of a distinct painting voice.
